it was me, a camera and the hope of making it. like a prospector heading west, I sought the freedom of self-employment. i knew photo and knew it well. it was an investment i had been making for well over a decade and it was time to stand on my own. i was bound and determined to make it happen. i do however regret all those business classes i was oblivious to in college. during those first few months of ‘07, they were like bad dreams.

 

and from this i’m reminded of those first few potential client meetings. with clammy hands, i harbored the stomach of a love struck middle-schooler who’d just penned his heart to paper. will you choose me to shoot your wedding? check yes or no….  and as it turned out after a debut at a local bridal show, five checked yes.

 

it was all happening. i was learning how to sell my talents and what i did and did not want to do as a wedding photographer. this might seem like a backwards slogan, but i might not be the photographer for you. i tell all brides and grooms that they must choose the photographer who fits their style. idealistically, i seek the client who loves the thought of having an artist document their day. there are many moments that must be documented, but there are also many ways to arrive at any destination. thus i seek the client who want something different and chooses a different way to get there. and i’ve been blessed, blessed with many willing clients, who have allowed me to put my art and skill to practice on their day–to use the camera to expressively capture those defining yet fleeing moment. now don’t get me wrong, i don’t say ‘no’ to a bride on her wedding day.  it’s always my goal to produce a pleasing collection of images.
