new and old. art and life. visual and audible work by brian wagner.
remembering back, two thousand and six was a year of unknowns for me. it was the year after leaving the newspaper world and the year before i truly began weddings full-time. i was working as an assistant to a dear friend and long-time mentor, patrick murphy-racey, who i had worked with for many years before leaving knoxville in 2000. i was still unsure what in photography i wanted to do, though i knew i was tired of filling newsprint with fluff stories and having little control over my schedule. i guess in a sense it was my mid-life-mid-life, aka. quarter-life, crisis. i was living at home and learning by trial and error, what exactly i didn’t want to do with a camera. i was on the verge of the next step, with no patience in site, primed for change.
now that i look back, it was far from chance that several of my college friends and a cousin were getting married and happened to ask if i would be willing to shoot their weddings. i guess it was what i needed to do in order to understand what i would come to call my bread and butter in the years to follow. none-the-less, it was a year of exploration behind the camera. i turned a tool i once used only for news into a means of preservation and started wielding my skills into wedding work. i’m thankful to those friends and hope the images i captured help preserve those climactic moments in their lives. they also fed me well, though when there’s a job to do and camera in hand, stopping for food’s an afterthought at best.
oh yeah, and i went to jersey for a wedding. it’s hard to get the empire state building in the background round these parts, so that was fun!!!! enough talk, here’s the pix of ‘06.
